[Bone]I’m finally feeling almost human today. Between my going to camp and then my getting sick, Kay has been a virtual single mom for nearly two weeks now. This morning I felt well enough to take the kids to school so that Kay could finally have a break.

Saw in Time magazine that the Bone comic epic has finally been completed, and compiled into a single volume. When we went to the library on Saturday (as I was just starting to feel sick), I looked but could not find the Bone book — because the kids had already tracked it down and put it in our pile! This gave me hours of sick-time reading fun.

What is Bone? Calling it a “graphic novel” makes it sound too dark. It is an epic, a tale of unsought adventure. If anything, it reminds me of Lord of the Rings, except that it manages to be both scary and goofy at the same time. It’s a the-world-is-coming-to-an-end type story… with these cartoony creatures, the Bone cousins: Fone Bone, Phoney Bone and Smiley Bone. Don’t let their goofy appearance and antics fool you; this is a terrific story with many layers.

As an American missionary kid who grew up in Japan, I'm a child of two cultures, while not fully belonging to either. This gives me a sightly different view of the world.
