I baptized my daughter!

March 10, 2003

Yesterday, Erin (who is 5) was baptized! It was great that Pastor Dave let me do the actual baptism — or rather, attempt it. I held Erin’s nose and tried to dunk her, but she resisted, saying, “No!” Before I could be startled for long, Erin said, “I’m going to do it,” and down she went. Dave was laughing as he instructed me to put my hands on her. And Erin, she stayed under for a long time!

Later over lunch, one of our friends asked Erin, “So do you feel any different?” She responded, “I feel close to God.” Wow.

As an American missionary kid who grew up in Japan, I'm a child of two cultures, while not fully belonging to either. This gives me a sightly different view of the world.

  1. Aww, that is so sweet! 🙂 And uh..what should one say to someone who’s been baptized? (congratulations, best wishes, hurrah)?? All I know to say is: WELCOME, Erin and KEEP GROWING IN JESUS!

  2. Often when I hear things like this, or when I talk to my daughter (3 years old) about God & Jesus, I feel a deep longing to have the simple, unshakable faith that a child has. It really encourages me sometimes, and I often find myself thinking of a description from a movie: “You are like a glass, and when you’re little, the glass is little and it only takes a little bit of faith to fill it, but as you get older, the glass gets larger, and the same amount of belief doesn’t fill the glass anymore.” – That gives me pause, and a lot of food for contemplation.
