Green light to proceed

May 28, 2003

[Traffic light on green]It seems that God is starting our home group before it starts. One of our desires is to create a safe place for “the lost boys,” people who are Christ-followers but have trouble fitting in to “church.” This past week, we had several come through our house — to look at our air conditioner, to refinance our house, to repair the brakes on our friend Mike’s car that’s been living in our driveway.
Saturday night, Mike and Teddy were over, so we watched a tape of Joe Satriani, Eric Johnson and Steve Vai in concert, doing instrumental electric guitar pieces. I mentioned that my back was hurting and that I had to lead worship on Sunday, so Kay said, “Why don’t we pray for you?” Except that sly fox deliberately stayed out of praying so that Mike and Teddy would have to pray, to give them practice. Then Mike said his stomach wasn’t feeling well, so we prayed for him (Kay jumped in that time).
And so it begins: Eating together, watching guitar gods on video, and praying for each other. Like I said, God is starting before we are.

As an American missionary kid who grew up in Japan, I'm a child of two cultures, while not fully belonging to either. This gives me a sightly different view of the world.

  1. Satriani is the man. And few know it. What a blast to watch all three of those guys in one show. If your ever down this-a-way, i’ll have to take you and to see Alex perform with some of his buddies. ridiculous.
