Karen Carpenter

Karen CarpenterLast night, Mike & I happened to stumble onto a PBS documentary of The Carpenters. How could I have forgotten them? And I had no idea that Karen Carpenter was a drummer/singer.

There we sat: Mike, who worships Led Zeppelin, and me, who likes Tool, Radiohead, Porcupine Tree. There we sat: utterly captivated. I leaned over to Mike and said, “This is sucking all the rock ‘n’ roll out of me.” I fell in love with Karen Carpenter’s amazing voice all over again.

As an American missionary kid who grew up in Japan, I'm a child of two cultures, while not fully belonging to either. This gives me a sightly different view of the world.

  1. You better talk to Steve Fuller about this one. He was firmly convinced the Carpenters were the anti-Christ.

  2. Randall, keep in mind that that The Vineyard does not have an official position on The Carpenters, so individual churches may hold different views.

  3. so what you’re telling me is one Vineyard’s anti-christ is another Vineyard’s messiah?

  4. Once on E! I think they featured some clips of the Carpenters when they first started. I too was shocked to see her play the drums. She made the audience cheer wildly when she did a sample — I think she and her brother were somewhere in their College years (or if I remembered correctly).
She is an inspiration to me, and my love for singing.

  5. Calling occupants…

  6. Who is it that sullies her memory with one of their worst songs?
Back! Back! Get thee to the early 70’s!

  7. Back to the early 70’s?
    Dude… I never left.
