My prolonged unemployment has had positive effects: Kay, realizing that once I get a job I could still lose it any day, has decided to become a serious investor in order to retire me as soon as she can. And she has discovered that she really enjoys it. She is learning incredible things about money and how it works; it’s all around us, and we don’t see it.
The business trip she made recently was to check out an apartment complex in Ohio that was going up for auction. This morning she was on the phone working the auction itself, and, sadly, was outbid. I say “sadly” because that’s how I feel, but Kay is riding high, laughing, talking about how much she has learned and saying, “Remember, the deal of a lifetime comes along once a week.”

Jon: Several people in church planting have gotten into real estate investing. That is a really great method for earning income if done right.

Most pastors say they’re more interested in spiritual growth than in numbers, and they mean it. But if “the number of people giving” is the sole source of income and it goes down, any church, no matter how noble, will quickly find its back against a wall and be forced to consider how to “get more people.”
Some pastors stay bi-vocational for this reason, but it’s not the only way.
