Sign of the Cross, part 2

March 29, 2004

Our children have bedtime rituals: put on pajamas, brush teeth, Daddy reads a story (“Do the voices!” the children say), then off to bed for prayer, hugs and kisses. With 6-year-old Erin, the kissing is quite complex; it must include my kissing her cheek, her kissing my cheek, nose-to-nose rub, her kissing my nose, and pressing our cheeks together. But at the end she began adding the sign of the cross. She crosses my forehead and then places her palm where she crossed and says, “God bless you,” which I also do to her at the same time.

So I was undone the other night when I tucked her in after getting the bad news from Apple. Erin made the sign of the cross on me but altered her ritual by saying, “The peace of the Lord be upon you.”

Unless we become like little children…

As an American missionary kid who grew up in Japan, I'm a child of two cultures, while not fully belonging to either. This gives me a sightly different view of the world.

  1. Precious! I love being a parent! What a blessing. High maintenance but totally worth it.
Hope Kay and Trevor had a good time camping.
