The Gospel Experiment

October 19, 2004

[World on Fire]Dear friends,

17 days ago I posted The Viral Gospel, but as far as I know the only person to respond was a random stranger. So now I appeal to my peeps, those who know me face-to-face:

Do you have $8 to spare? Mike Todd‘s “experiment” is to see how much the world could be changed through a little bit of money, as a viral idea or “meme”. He is asking for 10 Canadian dollars, which is only 8 US dollars. At last count, he has raised $902 Canadian, contributed by 55 people from 5 different countries. The money will go to World Vision, a relief organization.

Why would you want to do this? Well, step 1 is to watch the Sarah McLachlan video World on Fire. If you tried to watch this before and all you got was “you need iTunes to watch this,” they have changed it back. It looks like someone saw that lots of people were watching this video and thought, “Hey, we could force everyone to watch this on iTunes. After all, it’s a free download, so it can’t hurt. Right?” And I bet the number of people who actually saw the video dropped, and somebody else noticed and complained. Anyway, check out the video, which Mike calls simply “the gospel.”

Now go over to Mike’s blog and click on the DONATE button in the right-hand column. Don’t think about it, it’s 8 measly bucks. Just do it.

Having done so, if you really want to take this experiment seriously, tell a friend. At the very least, leave a comment below. It’s easier to get involved in something when you know that others have done it.

We can all do this. It could change the world — not the entire world, but somebody’s world.

  2. Hey Jon,
I’m glad you sent the email. It’s a great video, and a great thing to consider – specifically how much money is spent on entertainment while the world suffers. I’m adding this to my list of things to do once I accept a job offer…

  3. Jon, I’m gonna go find something to sell on ebay so my unemployed self can contribute.
    You rock.

  4. Done deal.

  5. Hi Death Rattle –
Thanks for the opportunity to help. The money spent on entertainment and sports in this country is enough to make a person choke. WTG, Sarah.
    Get well soon!

  6. Jon, thank you. Thank you.
    Regina and I are in.

  7. The Gospel Experiment influence is spreading

It was nice to get a shout from Jon Reid as the “random stranger” who was the only person to his knowledge who had responded to his Gospel Experiment post. Jon sounds a little discouraged in his post, but he

  9. Jon, you got at least two strangers on your first viral post. I was in right away. I am not random, however.
